I found my editing process slightly more difficult in this project than it usually would be due to the lock down and the university having to be closed, this is because i was using my home laptop which is quite old and slow, i also had to use a different software that i am not used to. For this project I used Adobe Premiere Pro whereas i am more use to Final Cut Pro, however I did get use to Premiere quite quickly so it was not too much of a problem in the end.
When editing i always make sure to organise my footage into folders before anything else, this is important as it means when it comes to putting the video into a sequence i know exactly where each bit of footage is. So for this edit i had three different folders ; B roll footage, Interview 1 and interview 2. I then cut up the footage, named it and placed it into the appropriate folder.
I then worked on putting a sequence together using both the interview and b roll footage. I started off with some establishing shots to show the viewer where the video would be taking place, for these shots I used a long shot length to show the the viewer the whole landscape. I then introduced the interview and from then on I used the interview over b roll footage. The b roll footage was very useful in hiding cut in the interview footage, helping me make the interview flow better. To help the narrative of the edit I would put B roll footage of what the interviewee was talking about over him talking about it. This meant that the viewer would not only be listening about something but they would also see images of what the interviewee was talking about. For example when talking about the locomotives I put footage of the actual locomotives over the interview dialogue. This helps the viewer understand what they are hearing.
Once i had finished putting the footage into a sequence i decided to start working on the footage. I added some calm music i found that i felt went well with the tone of the documentary. I made sure to add music in some parts that i felt would be quite boring without it but i also made sure not too have it playing the whole time which i thought could be quite annoying to listen to. I also kept in some dietetic noise within the b roll footage to help immerse the viewer into the edit.
