Research is one of, if not the most important factors in creating a documentary. Without research it is impossible to maintain accuracy throughout the documentary. Before a documentary is made a great amount of research is needed, if research is not done then you will struggle to talk about the topic and you may even give incorrect information in the documentary. If the information giving in a documentary is not true or relevant the audience may not trust anything the documentary says, the person who created that documentary may then be seen as unreliable and not trustworthy effecting there future work.
A good amount of research is greatly important when interviewing as well, if no research is done on the interviewee the interviewer could easily struggle to find questions to ask. There is also the possibility of offending the interviewee if the correct research is not done, as well as the fact you may just ask boring questions without doing research resulting in a slow and boring interview.
The more research done and the deeper the documentary maker digs into the topic will also effect the quality and success of the documentary. If lots of research is done you will be able to give more information that other people can not, you may also be able to find controversial facts in the topic you are documenting, which will more than likely make the documentary more popular.
